Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx (LTS) Desktop setup / tweak

New Ubuntu is out. Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx (LTS).

So whats new? Ubuntu 10.04 is a LTS (Long Time Support) version, it means that the makers of Ubuntu will support the version (desktop) for 3 years (instead just until the next version released). My first Ubuntu installation was Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) and since then I have install all Ubuntu versions that have come out from Canonical Ltd. Here I'm trying to gather info that is useful to get a "working" desktop, and my work have not been easier.

Here we go.. freshly installed, a Lucid Lynx

The installation itself is a straight forward procedure, desktop installation (I, myself use the "alternative" CD, just because I use a laptop and like to encrypt the whole partition at boot). You can read about here:
Ubuntu 10.04 Alternate installation (encrypted LVM setup)
 .

Configure Firewall
If you are concern about your security, then it is appropriate that you activate the firewall and prevent any unauthorized access to your computer.

UFW is installed by default, but if you need a graphical interface, install GUFW. You can install it from the Ubuntu Software Center, called Firewall Configuration. Start the application from System / Administration and enable it (Deny for incoming) and add rules (add button) if you need access to the desktop from another computer (or if you use bittorrent etc.).

Ubuntu Tweak
Ubuntu Tweak allows you to tweak your system settings, all in one place. You can install new applications, customize your desktop settings, configure your startup applications, changing the system filetype association and many more tweaks in this single application.

Go to ubuntu-tweak.com and click on Download Now button.

Start up Ubuntu Tweak from Applications / System tools. I like to start in the Source Center, unlock it (right lower corner), and add source for your favorite applications. Choose "stable" sources over "unstable" ones (for developers or daily build), you can get conflicts (not normally) so don't click everything :) and be careful with dock-bars (one will uninstall the other etc.). Be sure to add Ubuntu Tweak, here is some more that you may like to have:
  • Adobe Flash PPA
  • Déjà Dup PPA
  • Mediaubuntu
  • PPA for KeePassX
  • Skype
  • Ubuntu Tweak Stable Source
After the visit to source center, next is the Application Center. Start to mark your favorites (and unmark the ones you don't like) and click apply. Here is some applications that I can recommend:
  • Audacity
  • Deluge BitTorrent Client
  • FileZilla
  • Gimp Image Editor
  • Gnome Do
  • KeePassX
  • Nautilus-DropBox
  • P7Zip-Full
  • Pidgin
  • Pitivi Video Editor
  • Skype
  • Ubuntu restricted extras
  • VirtualBox
  • VLC Media player

Good to install (click link to install):

Other.
  • Set up UbuntuOne - Applications > Internet > UbuntuOne to get started
  • Download the Ubuntu Manual http://ubuntu-manual.org/

I have not really tweaked anything more then this, but as I stumble on stuff I will update this post.

*** More to come ***
